Kawartha Lakes Road 121 (known within Fenelon Falls by various names, including Lindsay Street, Helen Street and Colborne Street) is a municipally-maintained class-3 roadway[2] located in the city of Kawartha Lakes, in the Canadian province of Ontario. The road runs in a predominantly north–south direction and covers a distance of 42.0 kilometres (26.1 mi), before continuing north into the Haliburton Highlands.[1][3] The road crosses mixed geography, lying partially within farmland, urban space, and the granite Canadian Shield.[1] The former provincial highway passes through several small unincorporated communities between its southern terminus, Highway 35, and northern terminus, Boundary Road. These communities comprise Powles Corners, Fenelon Falls (formerly an incorporated village of Victoria County), Fell, Burnt River and Kinmount.[3]

Prior to January 1, 1998, Kawartha Lakes Road 121 was known as Ontario Highway 121.[3] Prior to 1955, the portion of Highway 121 south of Fenelon Falls was numbered as Highway 35. After the paving of the Fenelon Falls Bypass, Highway 35 was diverted west of the village.

Route and history

Kawartha Lakes Road 121 began as a road linking Fenelon Falls with Burnt River and Kinmount. Most of roadway was in existence by the turn of the twentieth century. For most of its length, it follows the concession roads of the former Verulam and Somerville townships. The first section of the highway to Northline Road follows the Lindsay–Fenelon Falls Road, built over an ancient Indian trail. This became Highway 35 with the establishment of the provincial highway system in 1931. In 1955, it was renumbered as Highway 121. From Northline Road, it runs north-east, then north between the I and II concessions of Verulam Township to Fell, at the northern boundary of the township. From here it veers east, then north between lots 18 and 19 of concession I in Somerville Township. The road winds north-east alongside the former Victoria Railway and the Burnt River to the village of Burnt River. A bypass around the village, along the eastern shore of the river, was built in the 1960s. At Somerville Sixth Concession (Hillside Drive, now Kawartha Lakes Road 44), the road again assumes and eastward direction. It turns north and follows the Bobcaygeon Road along the eastern boundary of Kawartha Lakes, north through Kinmount.
